Our History

The LVCT Training Institute began as a training programme that sought to increase the human resource base (VCT Counsellors) to respond to the HIV and AIDS epidemic by helping the clients know their HIV status. The training programme was initiated to offer VCT trainings to:

1. Health workers to promote knowledge of HIV status in the pre-ART era where counselling was essential to those testing HIV positive.

2. Non-medical testing and counselling providers to task shift and promote community based HIV testing and counselling when scale up was essential.

By 2011, the Training Programme was offering a range of courses to health care workers to bridge the knowledge gap among in-service providers. These include: Diploma Course in Counseling: HIV Testing and Counselling in Community and Clinical settings, Comprehensive HIV Testing and Counseling (formerly VCT),HTC Service providers Support Supervision, Total Quality Management(QM) for HIV Service Providers , Couple HIV Counseling and Testing (CHCT), Trauma following Sexual Violence, Clinical Management of survivors following sexual violence (PRC), Most At Risk Populations(MARPs) Sensitivity Training, Provider Initiated Testing and Counseling (PITC), ART and Opportunistic Infections Management, Adherence Counseling , TOT - for HIV Related Courses, TOT -for Quality Assurance, TOT -for Laboratory Technologists for CT Courses and Peer education trainings. The training curricula attempt to produce candidates who are well-informed, open minded, analytical and flexible in the approach to new HIV and AIDS information.

The LVCT Training Institute continues to train human resource for community HIV and health services in Kenya contributing to Vision 2030. The LVCT Training Institute has contributed to development of national curricula: National HIV Testing and Services (HTS), Diploma in Counselling: HIV Testing and Counselling in Community and Clinical settings Clinical management for post rape care for survivors of sexual violence, Most at Risk Populations Sensitivity (MARPs) Training

LVCT's Diploma Course in Counseling: HIV Testing and Counselling in Community and Clinical settings offers a career development path to HTC providers functioning within Kenya's community health strategy with 85 graduants alumni.

In 2011, the LVCT Training Institute was registered by the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology (Reg no. MOHEST/PC/1552/011). It remains a NASCOP accredited HIV services training institution and KCA accredited to offer counselling and training services. It has two programs units namely: Professional Certificate courses and Curriculum development. Quality management mechanisms have been instituted to effectively monitor and assure continued provision of quality trainings and training related services.

LVCT Training institute is under Business Development department and its staff includes a Director, Business Development & Training Manager, trainers, Health care professionals, a finance manager and resource centre managers. The Training institute is located at the Headquarters along Argwings Kodhek Road.
